Cushioning is king in 2014. Need proof? Even the original minimalist model is getting a softer ride this year. The new Bikila EVO features a thin, full-length layer of durable foam that takes the hard edge off the roadway. Another update: Vibram has cut back on its use of outsole rubber, which makes the shoe lighter than earlier models.
BOTTOM LINE: A fine barrier between you and the elements.

Vibram won over our minimalist testers with this version of the Bikila, thanks to a more substantial outsole that provided a level of protection and cushioning they had found wanting in the prior versions. The quick-lace entry was also deemed much easier to get into than past Vibrams tested by our team, and the upper is more flexible and breathable. While still very much a barefoot shoe with a negative heel-toe drop, the EVO was deemed to be substantial enough for light trail work. Testers said they’d use it for form running, speed drills, short efforts, cross-training, or on the beach because the upper dries so quickly.
